Forecasters Warning

Heavy Rain and Flooding

Areas Affected:
South-western Scotland, northwest England, Wales, southwest England, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland

Valid: Until further notice

This is an update to the Severe Weather Warning that was issued by Metcheck on Tuesday 17th November, this update issued at 11:35 on Friday 20th November.

The heavy rain that has brought major flooding to parts of the northwest has finally moved away and many areas will see a drier day today, although some heavy showers are still expected.

Concern is now focused on the next Atlantic weather system that will move into Britain and Ireland later tonight and during Saturday.

This will bring further heavy rain across all parts, with up to 50mm (2 inches) of rain expected in some western areas during Saturday. This will exacerbate the flooding problems in those areas already badly hit, as well as increase the risk of flooding occurring in other areas where the land is saturated.

Strong to gale force winds will also develop, with gusts up to 70mph expected around Irish Sea coasts during Saturday.

These conditions will result in hazardous travelling conditions, and widespread flooding will continue to be a major worry.

Please check with the Environment Agency if you are in England and Wales and are worried about the risk of flooding:
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/31618.aspx?type=Warnings&term=All

Or if you are in Scotland, check with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency:
http://www.sepa.org.uk/flooding.aspx

Further heavy rain is expected over the coming days, with flooding likely to remain a major concern, and this warning remains in effect until further notice due to the severe flood risk.

This Severe Weather Warning will be updated tomorrow, Saturday 20th November.
